Lake Hayes Trail Loop:

(8km / 1 ½- 2 hours / Easy)

Literally on your doorstep! Experience the beauty of Lake Hayes with the scenic Lake Hayes Loop Track. This is an easy 8km loop trail that takes approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours to walk and offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountain ranges. Enjoy the tranquillity of the area and make sure to bring your camera to capture the mesmerising reflections on the lake's surface. If you'd like to take a plunge, Lake Hayes is a popular swimming spot during the summer months as its significantly warmer than the other lakes in the district.

Locals' Tip - take a small detour to the cellar door at Amisfield for some wine tasting and to Mora Wines & Artisan Kitchen for an amazing brunch, and maybe another wine tasting.

Lake Hayes Trail Loop

Arrowtown Millennium Trail Loop:

(3.25km / Less than an hour / Easy)

Follow in the footsteps of gold miners on the Arrow River trail. This historic track starts in Arrowtown and takes you along the banks of the Arrow River, past old stone cottages and abandoned mining equipment. There are no shortages of places to stop and take a moment to enjoy the tranquillity of the river and the surrounding mountains. There are also plenty of swimming holes too if you happen to be visiting in the heat of summer.

Locals' Tip - after the walk, drop into The Dishery for coffee, brunch or lunch, and also check out the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement next door for a history lesson and pop into the studio of Jenny Mehrtens artist to buy some inspirational art to take home with you.

Arrowtown Millennium Trail Loop

Sawpit Gully Loop:

(8km / 2 – 3 hours / Moderate)

Nestled above Arrowtown, Sawpit Gully is a hidden gem that offers a peaceful and secluded hiking experience, with great views. This lesser-known trail starts in Arrowtown and takes you through a beautiful native beech forest, with moss-covered trees and bubbling creeks creating a serene atmosphere. The hike involves a moderate climb, and as you ascend, you'll pass stunning waterfalls and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, Arrowtown and Lake Hayes. 

Locals’ Tip – go clockwise if you want to get all the climbing out of the way at the start or anticlockwise for the longer but easier ascent. And once you are done, treat yourself to an ice cream at Patagonia and stock up your pantry at the Royalburn Farm Shop which is packed full of locally sourced goodies.

Sawpit Gully Trail Loop

Moke Lake Loop:

(7km / 1 ½ to 2 hours / Easy)

This picturesque loop track which is 15 minutes out of Queenstown towards Glenorchy, takes you through rolling farmland, peaceful forests, and along the shores of the serene lake. Capture breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains mirrored in the tranquil waters and enjoy a picnic by the water's edge or jump in for a swim.

Locals' Tip - bring a picnic with you which you can order at Rosie's Plate or stop off for the world's best donuts at balls and bangles in Queenstown.

Moke Lake Trail Loop

 

Mount Crichton via Sam Summers Hut Loop:

(7.5km / 2 - 3 hours / Moderate)

For a moderately challenging day hike, take on the Mount Crichton Loop, which is 15 minutes out of Queenstown towards Glenorchy. This track takes you through ancient beech forests and across alpine meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The hike is moderately difficult, with steep ascents and descents, but the panoramic views from the summit are well worth the effort. So is the stop to see Sam Summers Hut.

Locals' Tip - keep going on to Glenorchy at the top of Lake Wakatipu and enjoy a drink and a meal in a traditional New Zealand pub setting at the Glenorchy Hotel
